Chance’s Story

One of the first questions people ask about dogs up for adoption is how did they come to be looking for a home? What’s their story?

Chance was found on the city streets of Philadelphia and a Good Samaritan brought him to ACCT Philly in May of 2019. At the time, the shelter was dealing with an outbreak of a bad upper respiratory virus and so new dogs were housed in what was called “tent city,” temperature controlled tents, to limit exposure. He had wounds on his face, possibly from scrounging for food, and was very thin.

He spent several weeks there, amd that’s where his now foster mom met him. She was volunteering there and asked if LDCRF could take him. LDCRF was already pretty full at the time, but a generous supporter who also fell in love with Chance offered to pay for additional medical costs. LDCRF said yes, knowing it was very unlikely he’d make it out otherwise, so in Early June, Chance came to LDCRF to start his journey in searching for a home.

Was Chance ever in a home?

Chance didn’t know how to walk on a leash, or listen to any commands when he first came to LDCRF. However he wasn’t scared of people – he wanted to greet everyone by jumping on them and giving exuberant kisses. He seemed very unfamiliar with getting in a car, and fascinated by exploring it. While we can’t be certain, based on all of this, it’s likely he was owned by someone but they didn’t take time to train him. It’s possible he was mostly an outdoor dog and/or that he was abandoned when someone moved. Regardless, what we do know is that he’s a remarkably fast learner, and has a very strong desire to please. More than anything he loves spending time with people!
